The Deben Valley Light Railway is a small garden railway located in rural Suffolk. The Deben Valley Light Railway opened in 1887.
It is set in a tiny walled garden and runs above the flowerbeds from Aldeburgh to Butley halt.
The line has a patina of neglect to it as due to passenger numbers being nearly non-existent and large debts meaning the future of the railway looks rather grim.
The railway itself is built on wooden shelves, above the flowerbeds in our tiny courtyard garden. The DVLR begins it's journey in the shed and passes over an elaborate lift bridge as it makes it's way to Aldeburgh station where historically the railway would have started. Then at the sound of a whistle, and not before the correct bell codes are sent on to make sure everything is safe, the train departs off to Butley Halt.
The journey is very short due to the size of our garden and the fact that I am restricted to using shelves on which to build the railway as the Domestic Authorities will not grant permission for the railway to be built on the flowerbeds.
The Deben Valley Light Railway is a 45 mm gauge railway, that has been lovingly developed by myself, to pay homage to the railway which people forgot to build. The DVLR is 16mm: 1ft scale, which is a popular scale used by many people modelling Narrow Gauge railways in the garden.
